Dig Finds #1

Earlier today, March 31, 2019, I went digging between two large boulders. I am going to call this location site ‘A’ and I will hopefully have more sites in the future. I was searching for anything interesting, I did not come across much but some of the rocks appeared to have gone through chemical weathering and were very frail. Besides that, the soil was very rich as for it was located in the forest surrounded by maple trees that would drop leaves all over the ground for years.

After I had dug for a while, I went back to my house with one of the rocks to cleanse and observe. The rock was about the size of my palm had an approximate volume of 65 mL. The rock was originally part of one of the two boulders I was digging between. Although it was part of a larger parent rock, it chipped off very easily.

Cleaning the Rock

The rock had a decent amount of moss covering one side of the rock and the other was covered in silt and there were not many visible holes within it.

After cleaning the rock, most, nearly all of the moss was removed and there were many holes in the rock. There were also very tiny reflective particles within the rock that were silver looking. Also while observing, a piece of the rock broke off and appeared as if it was oily. It was black and had a semi-smooth surface.

My hypothesis

I believe the rock had iron in it. The fragile edges and rusted look were probably due to iron oxidation, or known as rust. Also, the small shiny minerals deeper within the rock were most likely iron particles themselves. This concludes my first dig.
